hi guys,

I am very interested in a fly in trip to a remote lake. I am interested in catching many pike and possibly a trophy , also enjoy catching smallmouth, the forearm cabin seems to be a good fit? I have read many posts and Hardiman seems to be a very good lake.I am looking at a mid-June trip. I would appreciate any advice about this time of year and the mood the fish might be in? I have read bugs are a bit of a problem, but would put up with for some aggresive pike and smallies! I would appreciate any advice on time of year; comments on Forearm and Hardiman and lures or game plan for pike and smallmouth!   Deerhake-- would  like to hear from you. Your trip here last year sounded like a great trip! Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated!!!

         Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,
If your looking for smallmouth,, you will love Hardiman in June. When we were there in June the smallmouth were on beds everywhere. There were several bug hatches happening so the pike action was a little slow but the smallmouth made up for it.
The only down side is the walk to hardiman every day,,its an easy walk,,,maybe 10 minutes,,but it gets old when the bugs are bad.
Hardiman is a big lake with alot of rock structure,,there are rock piles that come almost to the suface everywhere,,be careful when motoring around they are easy to hit.
The cabin on Forearm is very nice with generator and running water and Ivanhoe's equipment is always in good order.
I take several groups to Canada every year and would recommend Forearm to any group that doesn't mind a little walking.

good fishing,

John, and guys,
thanks for info.I am first interested in a good pike bite; with smallmouth my next choice! Do you or anyone else know if bug hatch in June is a common problem with pike bite? I am really after best possible month for best shot at a good pike bite!!! I am thinking earlier in summer, with cooler water would be best??? I would be happy to hear any comments on the month of June and the pike fishing!

     Thanks Jeff

jeff,

I have always had the best luck with pike early , just after ice out, when they are in the shallow water. The problem is that conditions are terrible for fishing.
After that, it seems to slow down until all the hatches are over and the weeds have had a chance to mature. The weed beds give the bait fish somewhere to hide and the pike somewhere to feed.
Small pike can be caught year round but for the bigger fish ,it seems,  you have to give them a reason to be in the warmer(shallow) water, and small bait fish around structure is a great reason.
Our groups have had good success with big fish from mid july to late sept.
Just my opinion, but I hope it helps.

good fishing,

john

I appreciate your great advice and tips. I plan on booking a trip soon! This forum is a good tool to gather info. Always good to get any advice that may help with our odds. Anyone else with any tips that would help out with a first timer to Airivanhoe; glad to hear from you.  Good fishing to all!!

Jeff,
Glad to hear you are considering AI.  They're great people.  You mentioned reading many forum reports.  Rush lake has good reports on larger northerns, and smallmouth in adjacent lakes.
Biggs lake and Spearmint(portage) are good choices for larger northern and excellent walleye.  I have been to Biggs and enjoyed it a lot.
Both lakes have good reports on the types of fish you are after. You will also get reports on different times of the season.
Good Luck.

Jeff,
Our group has been to this system twice, both in early May.  Great for the smallies,  most in the shallow, rocky areas.   There are alot of them, just have to take your time and search for them.  Best if the sun is out, since Hardiman is spring feeded you have great visability 10'-15'.  That makes it easy to find the lighted colored areas(rocky flats). It is best with tubes and top water for the small mouth.  It is a great pike lake with lots of structure and down trees. Our group had landed several pike in the 40inch/15lb. range.

I would recommend going mid May opposed to early June just for the bug problem in early June.

Any other questions feel free to askk.
Thanks
