Hello all. Heading up to stay on Ivanhoe lake in the begining of August and can't wait! Just wondering if anyone has had any luck that time of year with the northerns? What worked/didnt work? . Also, with the stained color of Ivanhoe Lake specifically would it be better to use darker lures? Thanks for any advice guys.

I like using bronze weedless spoon seem to work better than the silver, I dont think you wil have a problem getting into pike.  but if you are looking for some larger ones try working suspended pike in deeper water trolling with big spinners like a wire worm harness with a few blades or big mepps bucktail. My first time going to Air Ivanhoe this year but have fished similar regions before.  we trolling in 60 feet of water about 25-30 ft down and hamered a few large ones..a 44inch 26 pounds and my buddy forgot to set his drag and  got spooled due to the amount of line let out while trolling. I tipped the wire harness with berkely worm but dont feel it is all that important if the fish come up to attack your lure your trailer is less important thatn your flash...let me know how you do and dont foget to target ambush points..
when dealing with a big pike in deep water be sure to handle the fish quickly and be prepared with camera and pliers to assure a timely release, lots of stress on the fish and we studies indicate that they is an increase in mortalitly rate for big pike caught in deeper water, many people dont like to target them for that reason.  They is a great article  in one of the magazine I have about all of the above I will try and find it for you.

good luck

Thanks for the advice Steve(bigfish). Did you fish Ivanhoe Lake? Did you catch good numbers of pike?

I'm glad you brought up spoons and spinnerbaits. I was thinking those too and maybe try a Bomber Long A, the deeper diving ones that go 12-15' with the 4 1/2" body. Honestly I may be over thinking it all a little though. From what I hear the pike will hit anything that flashes as long as you can find the fish and put the lure in front of them. I've been to Canada once but it was about 14 years ago and I remember catching a lot of pike. It wasn't in August though so I dont know if the heat will change things much.

Info Only...Was at Lake Oswald mid June...Bronze spoon worked best than any other spoon I tried. Bought the bronze colored crooked rapala minnow on shelf at AI and that thing caught the pike and walleye big time, Not a deep diver though maybe 5-6 feet..But can always add split shout if looking for depth. It was bait there, till it fell apart from so many caught. Silv/blu shad rap then worked very well for pike and walleye..took tons of bait live and lures only really used the raps, minnow stickbaits. not much going on jiggin and live baits....troll troll troll = fish...dogman
