I like braid for about every use except rigging where I use flurocarbon or mono. Big fan of Spiderwire but we are trying out some Power Pro this year.

Trilene monofilament. 6 or 8 lb. for walleye, 17 lb. for pike.

have been using fireline for several years... alot like spiderwire without the hassle of needing special real and rod. casts further than mono... gets your lure out of tough snags.... I have even had it bend a hook freeing a lure without breaking... use it year after year,,, just trim off 5 feet or so at first use for the year. Seems to get fewer birsdnest if you know what I 'm talking about than mono.

My guys have tried just about everything and most agree on Power Pro Braid for trip to Canada. Greater strength, less diameter, more sensative, ties well, less stretch, better hooksets and little memory. It's on all of the rods I bring. I split between 30lb and 15lb depending on rod/reel. Some guys go even heavier. Because of the decreased line diameter you can get away with the heavier line and not lose spool capacity or increase visibility.

i am caught between using power pro on one reel and fireline on the other, both are good but have to give the edge to power pro. last year I pulled out a number of huge logs and stumps. I was amazed. I asked the guy at the fishing store i frequent to put fireline on my new stradic and when I first used the real I noticed he put power pro on it on I am happy that he did

Dogman,
Glad to hear that Power Pro worked well for you. I think it's the best line out there. Plus it's made in the USA.

I must be old school. Use either Stren or Trilene mono for everything. Test lbs very by reel and rod but, nothing fancy.
UL set up ... 6lb L set up...... 8lb M set up .....12lb
Harnesses are made with 20lb.

I use Trilene or Stren (6lb & 8lb.) for any walleye or northern fishing. The only time I will ever use braided line is in real heavy cover or if I'm trolling for lake trout and have a lot of line out and need a good hook set. But using braided line for traditional freshwater fishing in these lakes is overkill and expensive in my opinion. But if it works for you and you like it, go for it.

I'm with Hoselayer on this one (old school...). Trilene mono is my choice... Spinning setups get 4/6/8 lb, nothing higher.. and baitcasters all get 10,12 or 15 lb (15lb is Big Game...). Great to read about everyone's thoughts and favorites on this topic..
ps: Bass Pro Fishing Sale starts this Friday (7pm)!! If you're in the Cincy Store, let me know, it would be nice to catchup with some AI friends.

In trying to revive this thread I have 2 questions: 1) For those using Power Pro, what's the biggest adjustment(s) or advice you'd give to someone giving it a try? (We usually use a monofilament.)
2) Does anyone use a copolymer/fluorocarbon such as Silverthread?

The first thought that comes to my mind is that you really almost cannot break braided superlines (PowerPro, Spiderwire, or Fireline)if greater than 20 - 30lb test. While it is true you can straighten a hook or pull up a tree, you have to be sure to wear gloves or rap the line around a piece of rough wood. If you pull directly on the line with bare hands you will soon have a nasty cut that just drives you absolutely crazy with pain every time you squeeze a wedge of lemon over your fried walleye. (Man that just makes me yearn to hear those fish fillets sizzling in the pan over the open fire! Our trip to Schewabic is 26 days away.)
Secondly, if you try to break off or pull out a snag with the rod with braid you will break the rod before the line snaps. That happened to me on a nice St. Croix, fortunately with a lifetime warranty.
I do like the superlines and have used the three I've mentioned with equal success. I really don't like Fireline Crystal. It is a much larger diameter and doesn't hold a knot very well. When I think I'm dealing with line-shy fish, I use a blood knot, double Uni, or a barrel swivel and tie in about 6 feet of either 6# fluorocarbon or Trilene XL.
So looking forward to the peace and quiet of Canadian Fly-in Fishing. There's nothing like it to rejuvenate the soul.
