I once heard a guy say "some lures catch fish, some lures catch fishermen" (wish I had thought of that).  These lures catch big pike for me and my guys:

Original Floating Rapala 5" in orange/gold and charteuse/white
Johnson Silver Minnow 3/4 oz in silver, gold and red/white
Mepps Syclops spoons
Storm Shallostick in red/white and blue/chrome (shallostick was discontinued by Storm several years ago)
Eppinger Daredevle 1oz in red/white and five of diamonds

For Pike:
1) lipless crank baits (can fish to any depth)..  1/2 ounce to 10/12 feet, use 3/4 ounce for 15-20 feet.. sexy shad color worked best..
2) Rapala x-treme slash baits.. perch color worked real well..
3) cotton cordell ripplin redfins.. chartreuse worked great..
4) strike king jerk baits.. (blue/chrome) and 'sexy' shad
5) for bigger baits (shallow water, ie: < 8 feet), use a 'striper' type plug, the bomber long-a works well for this, make sure to keep a 'slower' than average retrieve, you get a better 'wobble'.  This should work very well in May when the 'big' ones are up in the shallows..

going to try the Sebile magic swimmer this year... I'll let you know how it works..

i like using rubber frogs.throw one of these into the weeds and try to get it back to the boat without a pike.its like playing fetch with your dog, cast it out and mr. northern brings it back!

We are going to Bromley lake from May 15th to the 24th.  This is our first time on the lake and first time with AirIvanhoe.  We have 7 to 8 people going and about 2-3 of us are serious fisherman.  Most of our fishing will be for northern and about a half hr a day for walleye, just enough for lunch.  So if you don't mind I have a few questions I was hoping to get answers to before he leave. 1.  Should we use flourocarbon or 7strand wire leaders?  2.  I have a bunch of Mepps Algia gold #3 #4 and #5 spinners some with blk/red skirts, would they be useful?  3.  Beetlespins, what do you think?   Bring em or leave em?  4.  Original daredevils, 5 of diamonds, hammered silver, and gold spoons.  Bring em or leave em? 5.  Thundersticks blue and white, rapala blue with white/orange belly?  Bring em or leave em?    Any info would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance

HegewischHillbillie,

Flourocarbon vs wire leaders is a good question.  I've never tried flourocarbon myself.  Fished in same boat with guy who does.  I don't think it makes a difference for pike.  I like 30lb 12" wire leader.  Mepps with #5 blade should be in box.  Beetle spins should stay home.  Daredevils should be in box.  Blue and white Thunderstick/Rapala stickbaits are the first thing I would pack.  They will be money.

a few years ago one of my fishing buddies brought a bunch of tablespoons to the tool shop i work at and asked me to cut the handles off and put some small holes at each end.he put a split ring at each end and a treble hook at the end you would put in your mouth if you were to use it.they have great action and the weight was just right to get down to the depth the pike were at.those spoons were the hot pike lure of the trip!!

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it. I have 50lb test and 80lb test Cortland Spectron Briad at home and Im wondering if that is too heavy and I should get like 30lb test.  I need to take a trip to bass pro shop anyways because all I have is 80, 100, 125 lb test flourocarbon/wire leader material.  What do you think fellas, use the 50lb braid or get like 30lb test?  And two last questions, How big are the northern in that lake/What are the average sizes?  And are there any slot sizes on Bromley?

Thanks,

my favorite is a k.o. wobbler...  its a great spoon... doesn't get hung up in weeds like a rapala..  seems to have just enough motion to pull in the fish... great for walleye too...  found it by luck a few years ago... now I have a good assortment.  when going to a portage lake i put a bunch of spoons and wobblers in a small plastic lure box... works great... especially if you are on a canoe lake.

Spinnerbaits with gold blades, white or charturse skirts
Mepps spinners 4 or 5 size with gold/brass blades

One thing I do and it is recommended is to pinch the barbs down on all the hooks.  Makes it easier to remove the lure from the fish so that they can be released unharmed.

Never really noticed any more fish getting off with the barbs pinched down.

Also makes it easier to remove from my hide if that every happens.

The good old Zara Spook is my go to lure for top water when all else is going wrong. the original red and white or the silver are the best colors. I have had pike do cartwheels no lie out of the water for these things. This is my favorite top water lure of all time.
